When angel meets demon, prepare for all Hell to break loose.

What do a five year old and a ferryman have in common? What does a goddess have to do with a golf course? What's with all the artifacts in Hell? And what business could a seraph possibly have down there? To find the answers, you have to start with a beautiful, bored angel sneaking out of Heaven and wandering into the one dive bar in Purgatory. Add abduction courtesy of a devious demonic Duchess with a checkered past looking to expand her wardrobe. Call in the Cavalry in the form of one powerful Transporter demon with interesting tattoos, an active libido, and a nagging conscience. Toss in a colorful cast of characters, including a violet haired vixen with a mind-bending condo near the beach, a cigar smoking witch and one amazing little boy, for good measure. Season the mixture liberally with science, laughter and magic. Stir until trouble rises, skip the ice and let it all boil over into the wildest party Hell has ever known.

Anael, an ethereal beautiful angel enters a seedy bar in Purgatory. This isn't the set up for a joke, it's the first chapter. Anael stole a pair of wings so that she could escape Heaven and see some other realms. Unfortunately, her naivete ends up getting her kidnapped and mutilated by the baroness of Hell (who wants her wings to construct a dress for a ball). Gaap, a reluctant transporter demon, is tasked with getting Anael somewhere safe. Anael's thirst for adventure and travel just got fulfilled threefold.

The cover sure didn't pull me in, but I'm still very glad I decided to give it a whirl. Almost from page one, this book is all over the place. I mean that in a good way. The characters are absurd oddballs, and nearly everything they say is funny. This was a fairly refreshing read, to combat all of the serious books I've been reading lately. The themes aren't very subtle (for example, turns out heaven is run like a dictatorship that squashes individuality, according to Anael several times). The main plot was still rather fascinating, and pulled in various tales and myths, even turning a few well-known figures right on their head. I loved the characters. Gaap was a bit more likable or relate-able, since he's probably the most "normal" character in the book. Still, Anael's child-like innocence is charming, and even if a character (like the Baroness) is being downright evil it's hard to hate them. You're in for lots of banter and quotable lines. The setting covers Hell, Heaven, Earth, and everything in between. The characters do spend a lot of time talking, but the plot rarely drags and keeps moving at a steady clip. The writing is a descriptive delight, and I basked in both those places that were familiar and unfamiliar to me rendered in words that made me feel as though I could read out and touch. I highly recommend The Seraph Contingency!

The formatting and editing looks nice, and there's even a nice section for pronunciation of names and terms at the back.

The Seraph Contingency Anael Tale edition by Jennifer Fales Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Seraph Contingency Anael's Tale, by Jennifer Fales, follows an seraph angel named Anael who, out of boredom, decides that she is going to sneak out of heaven one day to get a glimpse of the other realms are like and sate her curiosity. While visiting a dive bar, Anael is kidnapped by the Duchess of Hell, Deumos, who takes Anael's wings for a gown she is having made for Lucifer's feast. Anael is later rescued by a transporter demon named Gaap, and from there the story just really takes it's own form!

I absolutely love this type of story. It took a topic that is normally taken so serious (heaven, angels, demons, etc) and turned it into the humorous story that i just couldn't stop reading. I have only had one other author do that to the point that I found it enjoyable and not boring. Fales did a great job at really building up the characters and just really allowing the audience to connect with them. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is looking for a funny and lighthearted read. I will definitely be looking forward to more from this author! Great job!

Summary
Anael is bored stiff in heaven. Yes, you guessed right. Anael is an angel, but a bored one at that. She decides to sneak out of heaven, because maybe she thinks that hell is a livelier place. Then, she is kidnapped by a conniving Duchess intent on pleasing Lucifer and her wings cut off! This means she can no longer go back to heaven if God decides to forgive her. Eventually, help comes in the shape of a transporter demon called Gaap, who has a flair for seamlessly moving across the three lower realms, while taking others with him. From here, the story gets more raucous, riddled with sacrilegious humor and an upbeat tempo only an author like Jennifer Fales can balance. The love twist in it is unintentional, and the funny scenes played out in its pages can only brighten a bad day.

Social/Historical Context
The story's plot doesn't seem to be something new, but the edge it has over all other similar tales lie in the humor and blasphemous inroads its author has decided to make into Christianity's holiest of doctrines.

Writing Style
A devote Christian must keep his/her beliefs aside before delving into this book, but then I think it is worth the risk, really. Humor and perverted wit bedevil the pages of this book, but this is a prerequisite for a wonderfully entertaining experience. Written in the third person and flawlessly presented, THE SERAPH CONTINGENCY ANAEL'S TALE is filled with comedy alongside the backbone story, which in itself is a very amusing one.

My Thoughts
Very daring, amusing and entertaining. Yes, I will recommend it to anyone who doesn't feel an innocuous attack on Christianity is a bad thing.
